Introducing Our New Chelsea Location

Our newest location in Chelsea will feature a new member of the Cynergy team, Toni Menge, a certified hand therapist. Our office is unique in that it is one of the few locations to offer such care.

What is Hand Therapy?
Hand therapy is the science of rehabilitating the upper limb that includes the hand, wrist, shoulder girdle and elbow. Hand therapy involves non-surgical methods such as physical exercise, wound care, restraining, scar management and splinting. Physical therapy is tailored differently depending on the condition; however, benefits of physical therapy are often similar. They include improving blood circulation to the injured area promoting faster healing, restoring movement and also preventing re-injury.

Hand Therapist
A hand therapist is a physical therapist or occupational therapist who has undergone the relevant advanced study and has experience in treating people with conditions that affect the hands and also upper extremity. These conditions may be as a result of trauma, surgery, injury and congenital or acquired deformity. A certified hand therapist (CHT) is a therapist who has successfully passed a theory in quarter rehabilitation and an advanced clinical skills test. A CHT is required to re-certify after every five years to demonstrate competency and continued professional development.

A hand therapist will undertake diagnosis and treatment of common hand disorders including requesting interpretation of x-rays. Furthermore, a hand therapist will offer psychological and emotional support to the patient. Ultimately, a hand therapist’s goal is to restore the hand’s function.

Hand therapy is a specialization that falls under physical therapy. Needless to say, the benefits of specialization in any field are boundless. In this case, a certified hand therapist will conduct quick and accurate assessment then offer immediate, comprehensive care reducing the overall time a general practitioner would otherwise spend on assessment. Prompt treatment decreases the healing period reducing overall medical costs. Moreover, quick restoration of the hand motor coordination and functions mean a faster return to work and life.
